Can You Think Of your mobile as PC???

A new operating system for mobile phones unveiled recently by the makers of  Ubuntu, the free and open source Linux based operating system, offers users a PC-like user experience when these devices are connected to a keyboard, monitor and mouse. In India the usage of mobile phones to PC ratio is 10:1.

Users buy phones to consume content and the PC to create content. With this function, users will be able to create content using the computation power of the power. Ubuntu on a mobile phone was designed to be different. The OS starts by greeting the users with a fluid, flowery pattern that displays app information, changing in response to the number of missed calls or social network notifications.

The navigation system for the Ubuntu powered mobile phone intelligently make use of all four edges of the screen for swipes that provide access to apps and navigation options, control the settings and open the display space.  For example, to access the familiar -Unity application launcher, the user has to swipe across the phone from the left edge of the screen. To switch between running applications, the same motion is executed from the right edge. Swiping from the top edge of the screen gives the user instant access to the system settings and services, without the need to exit the currently running application. Finally, swiping from the bottom brings up application-specific settings and features. Users do not have to unlock the phone every time they want to use it or come back to the home screen to access content.

The phone version of the OS will support both HTML5 apps written for smart phones in general, as well as the native apps specific to Ubuntu, developed using QML, OpenGL and C++. Essential tools, such as Gallery and Notepad will be native, and provide better performance and advanced features. Web applications of the latest kind can be installed on the new Os, and co-exist with native applications already loaded on the device.

The OS also works smooth and fast even on low-end hardware, because it dispenses with the Java virtual machine, improving performance for apps that are natively compiled to use the full hardware capabilities. Apart from these, the interesting feature of Ubuntu is it gains a mobile-like dimension when these devices are connected to a keyboard, monitor and mouse. This can be done by using a dock provided by phone manufacturers, or by using certain type of cables or through Bluetooth. By using a new technology called Virtual Desktop Interface, these mobile phones on Ubuntu can be used to access programs running on other Os like Windows.

The observers in the technology realm comments that the future of the new operating system will be dependent on the extent of support it receive in the coming months. The further developments of this OS may be known only after it has been showcased in the Mobile World Congress scheduled to be held at Barcelona next month.
