Sites go down as they always have and even with cloud hosting and various levels of redundancy sites will still go down; and while we've yet to have any serious downtime it doesn't mean we have not prepared for the issue. 


Status Cakes core testing software has been built around the concept of ensuring that if any one part of the system fails the rest can continue as normal. How to do it?? Quite simply by ensuring every single one of our servers is self-dependent and doesn't need to talk to another server to be able to detect website downtime.

The servers each send a list of the current IP s within the network to each other – and then they ping each other every minute. If one of these pings isn't sent (say because one of our servers has died) then another one of the servers will communicate with the others to tell the network as a whole it will pick up the slack for the offline server. This whole process happens within 1 minute of a server going down.

While the end user reporting in the interface would be delayed the actual alerts and testing would continue unaffected – and we have enough redundancy that over 80% of our servers could go offline (and remember our servers are in different data centers  before alerts are impacted. It’s just another layer of icing on top of the Status Cake; so don’t get caught out by up time monitoring services that delay important notifications – give Status Cake a try!
