The latest and fastest supercomputer of the world-Tianhe 2
TIANHE-2
Are you not interested to know which is the fastest and latest supercomputer in the world? This article will tell you what it is and explain its feature also!
- Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, a supercomputer developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, was ranked the world's fastest on a recent list of the top 500 supercomputers.
- This list was announced on June 17 of this year during The International Super computing Conference at Germany.
- This world's new No.1 system boasts a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark.
- Tianhe-2 supercomputer is double the speed of the previous American world record holder, Titan.
- It can perform 33,860 trillion calculations per second.
- The average computer performs around 100 million calculations per second .That is to say, the running of Tianhe-2 for one hour is equivalent to the computational works of 1.3 billion people working simultaneously on their gadgets for 1,000 years.
- It consists of 16,000 computer nodes, each comprising two Intel Ivy Bridge Xeon processors and three Xeon Phi chips for a total of 3,120,000 cores.
- Each of the 16,000 nodes possess 88 gigabytes of memory allocated to the Ivy Bridge processors and 8 gigabytes to the Xeon Phi processors.
- This represents the world's biggest installation of Ivy Bridge and Xeon Phi chips.
- The total CPU plus GPU memory is 1,375 TiB.
- During the testing phase, Tianhe-2 was laid out in a non-optimal confined space. When assembled at its final location, the system will have a theoretical peak performance of 54.9 petaflops.
- At peak power consumption, the system itself would draw 17.6 megawatts of power, while the external cooling system would draw a further 24 megawatts.
- The computer complex would occupy 720 square meters of space.
- The chip has a performance of 144 gigaflops and runs on 65 watts.
- Tianhe-2 runs on Kylin Linux, a version of the operating system developed by NUDT. Resource management is based on Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management.
- Tianhe-2, which took 280 researchers more than two years to complete, will be used at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou for bio medicine and the development of new materials.
- Tianhe-2 is also one of the most environmentally friendly ones.
